February 19, 2016 Update

Hi Kindergarten Families,

I hope you enjoyed your Four Day weekend!  :)  I had fun helping in my daughter's 2nd grade class for her Valentine's Day party ---- it was nice to be able to participate because of our half-day!

Thank you to the families that helped with our Valentine's Day party!  It was a great short and sweet celebration!

Our stained glass windows and Art Appreciation rockets are hanging in the hallway by the office!  We made the stained glass windows with Adrienne McMullen an Oak Park architect and Oak Park Education Foundation member.  The rockets were done yesterday with our Art Appreciation moms!

I appreciate you for taking time to learn about your child's progress in Kindergarten and ways to support them at home last week during conferences. The kids are chugging along as learners and "little people!"  Kindergarten is such an amazing year of development in many ways.

Throughout the next few weeks I will be attending a few professional development opportunities.  This past Tuesday I was at my monthly session of Research for Better Teaching with other district and building educators.  Next week I will spend Tuesday inputting data into the KIDS online portal with the other kindergarten teachers from Mann.  I will be in the building to periodically check in with the class.  Early in March I will be going to a national Kindergarten Conference in Schaumburg with other teachers from the building and district.

We have just finished our fourth round of the Passport program.  We will start a new cycle on Monday.  The kids are all making wonderful progress with their phonemic awareness and phonics skills!  The students are familiar with all the teachers now and should transition to a new group smoothly.

We have been working on:
Language Arts:
-identifying the characters, setting, beginning, middle and end of texts
-identifying digraphs (ch, sh, th, and wh) in words
-vowel sounds

Mathematics:
-comparing numbers using greater than, less than and equal
-counting backward from a given number
-comparing numbers --- which is larger, smaller?

Writing:
-Holding pencils and crayons correctly.
-Sounding out words independently
-Making finger spaces between words in sentences.
-Writing more than one sentence about a topic.
-Starting a sentence with a capital letter and ending with a period.

Things to Work on at Home:
-Reading and entering minutes into Biblionasium online for the Million Minute Challenge
-Counting backward!  Pick a random number and have your child tell you what comes before and "blast off" like a rocket!
