Week #3 in Review - September 18

We had another great and busy week!  Ms. Cole was in our classroom and commented on how in the three short weeks our class has learned so much.  The routines are clear and they know what is expected of them!

I have sent several SignUpGenius emails out this week: Mystery Reader, Star Student and Parent Teacher Conferences.  I imported the group of parent e-mails that I use for my other e-mails so all of you should be receiving the notifications.  If you are not, please check your SPAM folders and e-mail me if you still can't locate them.  I use SignUpGenius for many things throughout the year so it is helpful if you get the e-mails!

It is not uncommon for Kindergarteners to come home with a fair amount of uneaten lunch.  It is good to talk with your child about the things they need to eat first, how much you expect them to eat, etc.  The lunchroom is a busy place and some kids are distracted by all around them.  Sometimes all it takes is a "goal" of how much they need to eat.  Also, there are not spoons, napkins, etc. in the lunchroom, aside from students with hot-lunch.  If your child needs utensils for lunch or snack, please send them!

Please have your child go to the bathroom before they come to school.  This helps prevent accidents and makes them more comfortable!

Ms. Cole has asked that we include photographs of classroom happenings on our blogs.  I mentioned at Curriculum Night that I would not be posting many pictures, however at her request I will occasionally include some.  Please let me know if you do NOT want your child included.  I will not use names with pictures, just share the occasional fun day (i.e. dress up as a character day).

SPECIAL DAYS NEXT WEEK!
FYI, I will be absent from school next Wednesday, September 23rd.  We will be observing Yom Kippur with my husband's family (We are an interfaith family).  Mr. Frank LoCoco will be our substitute.  Mr. LoCoco has subbed for me in the past and is very familiar with my classroom set up as well as Mann School.  He had our class in gym this morning so he will be a familiar face for our class.  If you have any questions or concerns please direct them to the office.

Next Thursday is our first Mustang Motto Day.  Students can wear their Mann t-shirts, etc. or Mann School colors (navy and orange).  We will also go to our first Horseshoe Hooray store!

Next Friday is Dress as Your Favorite Book Character Day!  Students can dress as their favorite character (no face paint, weapons, etc.)  Please do not go out and purchase a costume for this --- it is meant to be a simple, fun day. For example, last year I wore gym shoes, jeans and a bright blue shirt.  I made a paper mask and was one of my favorite characters "rockin' in my school shoes...."  I would love to take pictures of kids holding the book with their favorite character so please send in a book if you have one!  If you are looking for easy ideas, check out Pinterest.

Here's what we worked on this week:
Language Arts:
-We read several books and talked about identifying the characters and se
-We worked on pointing to words in simple books and following text from left to right.
-We worked on identifying the first sound in many words.
-We started writing journal prompts (simple sentences "I can _____.").  We learned how to put fingerspaces between words, where the sentences need to start and that a period goes at the end.
Math:
-We worked on identifying the four basic shapes (circle, square, triangle, and rectangle).
-We played games with partners practicing counting numbers on dice and adding two dice together.
-We started making delicious shape pizzas!  YUMMOS!
Handwriting:
-We practiced holding our pencils and crayons correctly.
-We worked with scissors and holding them safely.

Things to work on at home:
-identifying the first sound in words (what does ball start with?)
-identifying uppercase and lowercase letters

As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to me via e-mail.  I prefer e-mail communication in the morning versus playground conversations.  This helps us get our day started quickly and doesn't hold up the other lines behind us!  I typically check e-mail when I take attendance and lunch count so I will see an early a.m. message at the beginning of the day.
