What is in that box?

You should have received this e-mail from Ms. Cole but here it is just in case you didn't!

What is in that box in the lobby?

Dear Parents,

Today all of our students learned about an exciting fall challenge to read a combined 1,000,000 minutes outside of school.  To generate enthusiasm, they were shown a very large box that contains the prize for our school should we accomplish our challenge.

We anticipate that this challenge will take roughly four months to complete, and we have lots of activities planned to ramp up and sustain the momentum.

This is how the challenge works:
  • Kids should try their best to read (or have someone else read to them) at least 20 minutes outside of school for five days a week.  We have attached a document showing the benefits of this independent reading!
  • Kids will log in their minutes at least weekly using a program at Biblionasium.com.  Students in grades 3-5 have already set up their accounts on their iPads and have been taught how to log in minutes. We are asking parents of our younger kids in grades K-2 to help their children log in minutes (older brothers and sisters can help as well).  ALL families will receive a letter home with their child's login information and instructions how to record minutes of reading.  The website allows kids to build their virtual bookshelves with the covers of all the books they have read.
  • We will send out weekly progress reports and come up with incentives along our way.
Finally....what IS in that box?  You will just have to wait and see!

Please email us if you have any questions. Certainly if you don't have Internet access at home we can help your child log in his/her minutes.

Happy Reading!
