December 4, 2015 Update

Happy December!

I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday with your family!

The kids have enjoyed our Gingerbread unit.  We are reading lots of gingerbread stories and comparing them with one another.  It's such a fun unit for this festive time of year!

We started our third cycle of the Passport to Reading program.  Ask your child who their teacher is this round and what they are working on!  For example, my group is working on identifying whether or not words rhyme.

Language Arts:
-sounding out words and sentences in our journals and other activities
-comparing texts and telling similarities and differences
-identifying if two words rhyme
-generating our own rhyming words
-segmenting the onset and rime of a word (ex. b-at, bat)

Math:
-identifying numbers that come before and after a given number
-using tens frames to represent numbers in the teens
-showing numbers in teens using manipulatives and pictures that we create

Handwriting:
-Writing numbers with correct formation.
-Holding pencils and crayons correctly.

Things to Work on at Home:
-Tying shoes, zipping coats, putting on winter gear!
-Sounding out words in writing ---- the kids know their letter sounds, now they just need to apply them to writing!
-Reading and entering minutes into Biblionasium online for the Million Minute Challenge ---- the school is halfway there!

Please continue to send a water bottle with your child each day.  Our classroom becomes incredibly dry in the winter time with the heat and this saves the kids from having to go to the hallway several times a day for a drink of water.

Don't forget to send winter gear each day.  Cold noses, fingers and faces are no fun!  Kids are outside for 30 minutes (roughly) at lunchtime so keep that in mind when dressing your child.  My "rule" for them is if a family sends it, they wear it!

Have a great weekend!
