January 8, 2016 Update

I hope you had a wonderful Winter Break!  We came back and hit the ground running with learning and having fun!  

We are regrouping the students for Passport to Reading and will start new groups in a few weeks.

A few reminders:  
Next week Friday, January 15th is an Institute Day for teachers.  Students are not in session.  Monday, January 18th is Martin Luther King Jr. Day so there is no school.  Enjoy the LONG weekend with your families!

We have been working on:
Language Arts
-breaking words into individual sounds, ex. b-a-t
-generating rhyming words
-identifying kindergarten sight words

-identifying beginning sounds of words and writing them
-creating word family words (cat, bat, hat)

Mathematics:

-showing numbers in teens using manipulatives and pictures that we create
-completing addition problems up to 12 with the counting on strategy
-decomposing numbers up to 5 (2 and 3 make 5, 1 and 4 make 5, etc.)

Writing:
-Holding pencils and crayons correctly.
-Sounding out words independently
-Making finger spaces between words in sentences.
-Writing more than one sentence about a topic.
-Starting a sentence with a capital letter and ending with a period.  
-Forming "Frog Jump" letters (F, E and D)

Things to Work on at Home:
-Areas identified in report card.
-Sounding out words in writing
-Reading and entering minutes into Biblionasium online for the Million Minute Challenge ---- the school is halfway there!

Here are few Student Council Events/Fundraisers that are Coming Up!:
January 4-29, - All School Box Top Contest
Goal of 10,000 Box Tops for Mann School Please collect box tops off of soup cans, cereal boxes, etc. Send them each week and we will tally up our class total. There is a classroom competition to see which class can bring in the most by the end of the month.

PAJAMA DAY - Thursday, January 14th
Wear your pajamas to school and donate $1 or more to the Oak Park Food Pantry.
